Become A Word Addict

feature photo

As Christians, we need to begin to develop an addiction today — an addiction to the Word of God. In other words, we need to become a Word addict. That may sound odd, especially if we do not have much of an interest in the Word of God right now. However, it is possible. I have done it myself and have seen others do it as well, time and again.

We learn at the very beginning of the Book of Psalms what this type of addiction to God’s Word produces.

Psalm 1:1-3 (AMP)

1BLESSED (HAPPY, fortunate, prosperous, and enviable) is the man who walks and lives not in the counsel of the ungodly [following their advice, their plans and purposes], nor stands [submissive and inactive] in the path where sinners walk, nor sits down [to relax and rest] where the scornful [and the mockers] gather.
2But his delight and desire are in the law of the Lord, and on His law (the precepts, the instructions, the teachings of God) he habitually meditates (ponders and studies) by day and by night.
3And he shall be like a tree firmly planted [and tended] by the streams of water, ready to bring forth its fruit in its season; its leaf also shall not fade or wither; and everything he does shall prosper [and come to maturity].

All we have to do is make a quality decision to give ourselves to it by focusing our time and attention on it. The more we give ourselves to it, the more our desire for it will grow. Eventually, it will consume our thinking. This should come as no surprise because that is what happens with anything we totally give ourselves to.

For example, it happens with people who give themselves to pornography. As they focus their attention on it, the spirit behind it moves in on their consciousness and eventually draws them from mental activity into physical activity. Finally, they come to a place where they cannot be satisfied and they cannot get enough.

That same principle works on the positive side when we begin to give ourselves to God’s Word. We can give ourselves to it to the point where it totally consumes our mental and physical life. The more of it we get, the more we want. The Spirit behind the Word of God, the Holy Spirit, will draw us and lead us closer to Jesus than we ever possibly imagined.

I can guarantee you that there is not a single person that is genuinely walking in faith and power who at sometime had not developed that kind of addiction by giving themselves totally to the Word of God for an extended time. I do not mean just a few minutes here and there either. I am talking about some serious time.

To summarize, we must determine to give ourselves to the Word of God extensively. This will require a daily effort on our part — not just Sunday. As we continually apply ourselves and our desire grows, we will become a Word addict. Once this level of addiction is achieved, we will never be willing to live without the Word of God again.

God Bless!
