Change Draws Us Closer To God

feature photo

Change is good because it draws us closer to God. Therefore, we should not be afraid of change. Fact is, all of us are going to experience many changes throughout our lifetime — some good and some bad, and we need to accept this. In other words, we should not be resistant to change, but embrace it instead.

Change occurs in our lives on a daily basis. Sometimes it can even happen in seconds, as it did when I had my life changing automobile accident in 1987. After the accident I was left with two choices.

  1. I could resist the change, sit back, feel sorry for myself and slowly die.
  2. I could embrace the change, confront and defeat the challenges of my new life and become a better and stronger person because of it.

I chose number two because I believe it is not what happens to each of us in our life that matters, but rather how we react to what happens. When we react to things in the right way, even a bad event can have a positive outcome. Moreover, my life is good (only lacking the companionship and love of a beautiful, Christian woman), and I am a better and stronger person today because my focus is now on God and His way of doing things instead of my own personal gratification and self-interest.

Matthew 6:33 (AMP)

33But seek (aim at and strive after) first of all His kingdom and His righteousness (His way of doing and being right), and then all these things taken together will be given you besides.

Change is going to occur in our lives whether we like it or not. All of our lives today are undoubtedly different from what they were yesterday, and our lives tomorrow will be different from today. That being said, I firmly believe God is actively involved in all of the changes we go through, and He is with us every step of the way.

What is more, God shows us that if we do not change, we do not reverence Him. Hence, as we grow in our relationship with God, we will deepen in our reverence, adoration, respect and worship of Him, and we will grow to respect the boundaries in life that God lays out in the Bible. Let’s look at some of the things God’s Word says regarding change.

God will hear and humble us because He wants us to change.

Psalm 55:19 (AMP)

19God will hear and humble them, even He Who abides of old–Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!–because in them there has been no change [of heart], and they do not fear, revere, and worship God.

God is actively at work in completing the work that He has begun in us, and this is going to require change on our behalf.

Philippians 1:6 (AMP)

6And I am convinced and sure of this very thing, that He Who began a good work in you will continue until the day of Jesus Christ [right up to the time of His return], developing [that good work] and perfecting and bringing it to full completion in you.

Life is constantly throwing curve balls at us. However, we can be confident that there is a purpose in everything that we are experiencing, and God promises that everything, whether good or bad, works together for good to those who love Him.

Romans 8:28 (AMP)

28We are assured and know that [God being a partner in their labor] all things work together and are [fitting into a plan] for good to and for those who love God and are called according to [His] design and purpose.

After all is said and done, the big change occurs following our death. We are actually given a completely new body in Heaven, and it is going to be amazing.

Philippians 3:20-21 (AMP)

20But we are citizens of the state (commonwealth, homeland) which is in heaven, and from it also we earnestly and patiently await [the coming of] the Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) [as] Savior,
21Who will transform and fashion anew the body of our humiliation to conform to and be like the body of His glory and majesty, by exerting that power which enables Him even to subject everything to Himself.

To summarize, we know, and the Bible backs it up, that change draws us closer to God as well as facilitates His plan for our lives. Therefore, we must embrace it in order to accomplish God’s will for us knowing that one day we will be completely changed and living in Heaven for eternity with Jesus.

God Bless!

  1. Change…is a little frightening. Especially, moving across country and changing jobs, moving family away from family.

  2. Sorry for the delayed response, but I have been without internet access until today. This was due to a major change and step of faith in my life. I moved out from the parent’s house and on my own for the first time since my automobile accident, and it is quite a change. God bless!
