Six Steps To Obtain Spiritual Fitness

feature photo

The same way that not doing physical exercise will cause our bodies to get out of shape, not doing spiritual exercise will cause our spirits to get out of shape. It is easy to let the day-to-day concerns fill up our lives and take away from the time we need to stay spiritually fit. That being said, please find below six steps that can be used to obtain spiritual fitness.

1. Study God’s Word

There are many places in the Bible where it says to continuously study the Word. Phrases such as “Study to show thyself approved unto God” and “in his law doth he meditate day and night” tells us this. We need to stay constantly in God’s Word so we can avoid the ups and downs that most people go through. This does not mean we will not have trials and tribulations, but we will be in contact with God who knows what we should do to get through them. In other words, if our Bible is torn up, our lives are not.

2. Endure Hardship

When we do have trials and tribulations, we need to get tough. Read the Bible more, not less. Pray more, not less. Shout more words of victory, not words of defeat. This is when we need to keep up our shield of faith. Keep trusting in God’s Word. When we do, He will pull us through.

3. Be Strong in the Grace of God

It has been said that grace is God’s unmerited favor or God not giving us what we deserve. This is part of it, but there is a lot more. Titus 2:11-12 says that grace has appeared to all men teaching us that we should deny ungodliness and live soberly, righteously in this world. In other words, through grace, God is not punishing us for what we have done wrong, He is teaching us what we should be doing. However, to know what God is saying to us, we need to keep our hearts and spirits open to Him by spending some time each day praying and listening to Him for instructions.

4. Simplify Our Lives

There are many things that take up our time including work, school, extracurricular activities, family time and many other activities. These activities may not be bad things, but if they take up so much of our time that we do not have time for God, then we need to make some adjustments. We need to make and have time each day to pray and read our Bible so God can speak to and direct us.

5. Fellowship

The people we fellowship with will determine whether we are lifted up or pulled down. We need to fellowship with people who trust God. That will build us up and help us stay close to God. If we spend more time with people who do not know God, they will eventually drag us down. This does not mean we are to isolate ourselves from the world. However, we need to make sure we spend enough time with God and those who know God, so we can let our lights shine and lift others up without being dragged down.

6. Continue On

Now that we have started on the path to spiritual fitness, we need to keep moving forward. We cannot give in to temptations to quit. Instead, we must continue doing our spiritual exercise, and do it daily — not just Sunday. The result will be a life of overcoming those things that come against us and living a victorious, abundant life because that is what we have in Christ.

John 10:10 (AMP)

10The thief comes only in order to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have and enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows).

John 16:33 (AMP)

33I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.]

God Bless!
