The Door To God’s Blessings
Jesus teaches us that the number one sin is not some sin we commit. So, what is it? It is the sin of unbelief or lack of faith. Moreover, every other sin is an offshoot of this one sin.
Unbelief or lack of faith is not only a sin, it slams the door shut on God’s blessings. Each time Jesus’ disciples found themselves fearful, lacking some material need or ineffective in ministry, Jesus told them it was because of their unbelief or lack of faith.
Once the disciples were unable to bring God’s healing to heal a child. When they asked Jesus why, He answered them with the following.
20He said to them, Because of the littleness of your faith [that is, your lack of firmly relying trust]. For truly I say to you, if you have faith [that is living] like a grain of mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, Move from here to yonder place, and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.
After the Resurrection, Jesus reproved the disciples again because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.
14Afterward He appeared to the Eleven [apostles themselves] as they reclined at table; and He reproved and reproached them for their unbelief (their lack of faith) and their hardness of heart, because they had refused to believe those who had seen Him and looked at Him attentively after He had risen [from death].
Jesus hurts when we walk in unbelief or lack of faith for the simple reason that it blocks His ability to get His miracles to us. Evidence of this can be seen in the following passages.
3Is not this the Carpenter, the son of Mary and the brother of James and Joses and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here among us? And they took offense at Him and were hurt [that is, they disapproved of Him, and it hindered them from acknowledging His authority] and they were caused to stumble and fall.
4But Jesus said to them, A prophet is not without honor (deference, reverence) except in his [own] country and among [his] relatives and in his [own] house.
5And He was not able to do even one work of power there, except that He laid His hands on a few sickly people [and] cured them.
6And He marveled because of their unbelief (their lack of faith in Him). And He went about among the surrounding villages and continued teaching.
In the natural, it is like a child who will not listen to his parents’ advice, even though the parents have had experience that could help him avoid a problem. The child’s refusal to accept their guidance breaks their hearts.
It is the same with God. The door to God’s blessings opens when we believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of them that diligently seek Him.
6But without faith it is impossible to please and be satisfactory to Him. For whoever would come near to God must [necessarily] believe that God exists and that He is the rewarder of those who earnestly and diligently seek Him [out].
To summarize, unbelief or lack of faith shuts the door on God’s ability to get His blessings and miracles to us. Therefore, we must walk in faith in order to keep the door open.
God Bless!
