WD-40 For The Soul

feature photo

It is said that one can fix anything with duct tape and WD-40, although a big hammer helps as well. On a side note, it is surprising to know that one of the things duct tape is not to be used on is a furnace duct.

The name actually comes from the canvas it is made from, not from what it is intended to be used for.

That aside, what exactly does WD-40 have to do with one’s soul? To help us understand this, it would help to know exactly what WD-40 is and what its true purpose was.

Actually, very few people, outside of the manufacturer, know what is in WD-40. It is one of the best kept secrets in the world, and was developed back in 1953 by a chemist named Norm Larsen and the Rocket Chemical Company.

Larsen was attempting to concoct a formula for use in the aerospace industry in order to prevent rust and corrosion, which is a task accomplished by displacing water. Larsen and the Rocket Chemical Company perfected the water displacement formula on the 40th try. Hence, the name, which is straight out of the lab book used by Larsen, literally stands for “Water Displacement, 40th attempt.”

WD-40 was first used by a contractor in the aerospace industry that was having problems with moisture creeping into their guidance systems through the outer skin of their missiles. Therefore, to prevent the moisture from getting into their systems, they used WD-40 to replace or displace it.

With all of the above being said (ending my Cliff Clavin, did you know moment), what does it have to do with one’s soul?

We, as Christians, are similar to the aerospace industry that was having problems keeping water from getting into their guidance systems. In what way, one might ask?

Simply put, we cannot keep satan from injecting evil thoughts into our minds, we cannot keep the world from dumping its filth and corruption on us and we cannot keep the people around us from enticing and tempting us.

So, how do we as devoted, practicing Christians keep these things from crowding our minds and satan from corrupting our souls? The answer does not simply consist of refusing to accept and/or think about these things. No, the only solution for us is to replace or displace these things.

Displace them with what? With what the following scriptures instruct.

Philippians 4:7-9 (AMP)

7And God’s peace [shall be yours, that tranquil state of a soul assured of its salvation through Christ, and so fearing nothing from God and being content with its earthly lot of whatever sort that is, that peace] which transcends all understanding shall garrison and mount guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
8For the rest, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is worthy of reverence and is honorable and seemly, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely and lovable, whatever is kind and winsome and gracious, if there is any virtue and excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think on and weigh and take account of these things [fix your minds on them].
9Practice what you have learned and received and heard and seen in me, and model your way of living on it, and the God of peace (of untroubled, undisturbed well-being) will be with you.

Moreover, many people might think it was easy for the Apostle Paul to say the following because he was not living in today’s evil and corrupt world.

Philippians 4:4 (AMP)

4Rejoice in the Lord always [delight, gladden yourselves in Him]; again I say, Rejoice!

However, I beg to differ and here is why. Though Paul was in jail, it was unlike the jails and/or prisons of today. He was in a Roman jail, long before the amenities today’s prisoners have, and I sincerely doubt any prisoner of today would want to trade places with him and the conditions he endured. Yet, through it all, he continued to praise and rejoice in the Lord.

To summarize, we need to follow Paul’s example and instructions. Whenever we feel overwhelmed by today’s world and the problems associated with it, we need to displace them with a little WD-40 for the soul by filling our minds with the good things from God.

God Bless!
