We Carry The Name Of Christ On Our Shoulders

A blessing and a lesson.

Several years ago, a preacher from out-of-state accepted a call to a church in Houston, Texas.

Some weeks after he arrived, he had an occasion to ride the bus from his home to the downtown area.

When he sat down, he discovered that the driver had accidentally given him a quarter too much change.

As he considered what to do, he thought to himself, “You’d better give the quarter back. It would be wrong to keep it.”

Then he thought, “Oh, forget it, it’s only a quarter. Who would worry about this little amount?

Besides, the bus company gets too much fare, so they will never miss it. Accept it as a ‘gift from God’ and keep quiet.”

When his stop came, and he began to exit the bus, he paused momentarily at the door and then handed the quarter to the driver and said, “Here, you gave me too much change.”

The driver, with a smile, replied, “Aren’t you the new preacher in town? I have been thinking a lot lately about going somewhere to worship.

I just wanted to see what you would do if I gave you too much change. I’ll see you at church on Sunday.”

When the preacher stepped off of the bus, he literally grabbed the nearest light pole, held on, and said, “Oh God, I almost sold your Son for a quarter.”

The above example should show us, as Christians, just how much people watch us and will put us to the test at any given opportunity!

It should also remind us of two important facts:

  1. The only Jesus some people may ever see — is the Jesus in you and the Jesus in me.
  2. Our lives are the only Bible some people may ever read.

Therefore, we should keep and continue to build our faith by hearing, reading and meditating on the Word of God. Moreover, we must always be on guard by:

  • Watching our thoughts because they become words.
  • Watching our words because they become actions.
  • Watching our actions because they become habits.
  • Watching our habits because they become character.
  • Watching our character because it becomes our destiny.

Remember, we carry the name of Christ on our shoulders when we call ourselves Christians.

Forward this on to others if you would like. Put it in a blog, bulletin or email. There is no luck attached (good or bad) because God’s love is not dependent on blogs, bulletins or emails!

In other words, even if you decide to do nothing more than read what is here, that is perfectly okay because it has allowed me to express my love by sharing with you. However, should you choose to pass this on, you will show your love by sharing with others as well.

God Bless!
